"The audience was transfixed… not only by Barbara's brilliantly insightful autobiographical
commentary, but also the portrait of a marriage, with incredible insights into her
relationship with one of Australia's most famous artists."
— Gerard Vaughan, Director, National Gallery of Australia
Writer, muse, and philanthropist Barbara Blackman reflects on a fascinating life of extreme highs and lows, determined to find meaning, authentic spirituality, and wholeness — completely uncompromised by blindness.
SynopsisKnown to many simply as the blind ex-wife of eminent Australian painter Charles Blackman, Barbara Ena Blackman AO was a formidable creative force in her own right. A successful writer, tireless social advocate, and energetic patron of the arts, she navigated a life filled with some of the most colorful characters of the last 80 years, all while raising three children she was largely unable to see.
Filmed when Barbara was 85 and entering the winter of her life, the documentary follows her intimate soul's journey to reconcile her past and tie up loose ends. Woven together through a rich tapestry of childlike animation, archival footage, abstract recreations, and a deeply evocative soundscape, this feature-length documentary allows a gifted storyteller to guide us through her own epiphanies of loss, connection, and profound spiritual awakening.
