Biography

John Swindells —
Writer, Director, Producer

For over thirty years, my career as an independent writer, director, and producer has been driven by a singular quest: to find the human heartbeat in the most complex environments.

My filmmaking journey has taken me across the globe. I have documented an 85-year-old English Benedictine monk searching for 'the other half of his soul' in rural India. I have filmed with the Sioux Indians in South Dakota, got inside the head of an extraordinary young Melbourne man living with schizophrenia, followed a New Age cult conducting experimental therapy on 2000 traumatised African children, and — in partnership with philosopher Peter Singer — documented Henry Spira, the activist who stopped animal testing in America.

In A Family Divided, I asked what it would take for a former Sierra Leonean broadcaster, now refugee, to feel truly settled in her new land. In Seeing From Within, I explored the fully-lived life of an artist's muse, mother, philanthropist and award-winning writer who navigated an extraordinary existence — completely uncompromised by blindness.

My work has always been about more than capturing reality. It is a rigorous practice of deep listening, interpreting profound human needs, and translating them into compelling cinematic narratives. I have intentionally operated outside the traditional industry, relying on private backing to protect the creative integrity of my films.

Today, that investigative spirit and creative independence drives everything I do — from my corporate work to my current slate of original projects for film and television.

Whether untangling a brand's complex messaging puzzle or building sophisticated fictional worlds, the goal remains unchanged: to listen deeply, uncover the essence of the story, and connect on a visceral level.
